The 10 Best Articles on Refugees and Migration 10/2018

March 13, 2018 - Open Migration
A few hours from the general election, anti-immigrant violence struck again in Italy; 54-year-old Idy Diene, from Senegal, was shot and killed in Florence. From Italy’s first black senator to the fears of the African community – who might face deportation – the foreign press has been covering Italy extensively in the wake of the election. We then look at Libya, where the agreement between Italy and local tribes are at risk, and Syria, with many refugees returning to the war-torn country. Next, the data on migrant women, who were the subject of a statement by UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi on March 8, and the prevalence of “boats and camps” in images of migrants and refugees. Last, deportees on a US flight to Somalia have denounced abuse at the hands of the ICE, and the massive exodus of Venezuelans to Colombia.

March 6, 2018 - Open Migration
Italy has just wrapped up its general election and the results are clear: millions have voted for populist, anti-EU and anti-immigrant views. The election campaign was marked by strong anti-immigrant sentiments, culminating in episodes of violence, the latest being the attack on a human rights group in Macerata. We then take a look at the outer borders of Europe, where pushbacks and violations of human rights are still underway, and Libya, where the UNHCR is working to open new humanitarian corridors. Finally, some news from the USA, where the Supreme Court has made two contrasting decisions on immigrants, and post-Brexit UK.

European border control agency Frontex approves the work of Italy in Libya: the awful conditions in Libyan detention centres are not Italy’s fault. Myths on migration dominate the Italian election campaign. In France, Macron’s proposed crackdown on immigration draws criticism from humanitarian groups and some majority members. Australia is still detaining refugees on Manus Island. Last, a successful integration experiment in Tuscany, and some news from post-Brexit UK.

The foreign press has covered the march in Macerata, where thousands of people of people protested against racism and Luca Traini’s attack on migrants. In France, the National Court of Asylum has gone on strike to protest new government measures that would restrict access to asylum claim. Also: fresh violence against migrant centres in Italy, an investigation into the roots of intolerance, the voices of the victims in Macerata and much more.

August 1, 2017 - Open Migration
The attack on solidarity at sea continues - from the “identitarian” ship that wants to block migrants to the negotiation on a code of conduct for NGOs’ rescues at sea - while little is done to provide real answers to the so called “migration crisis.” Plus, the price of borders in terms of human life; the humanitarian crisis that can’t be solved with evacuations, as the example of the Calais Jungle shows us; integration for refugees in cities or through soccer. And last but not least, a beautiful (and hard) reflection on the difficulties of finding dignity in exile.

What is changing in the Med: five things you must know

July 28, 2017 - Open Migration
If you feel that many new things happened in the week of July 25, 2017 on the subject of of migration and rescues in the Med, it’s probably time to have a summary. A distinction must be made among certified political decisions, retracted announcements, decisions awaiting confirmation and an uncertain overall picture, but it’s definitely possible to sum up the new elements that may change the balance in the Med while affecting the lives of many people.

Reception of migrants in Paris crumbles at Porte de la Chapelle

July 19, 2017 - Eleonora Camilli
France’s policy on migrant reception is becoming manifest in increasingly ambiguous statements by President Emmanuel Macron and Interior Minister Gérard Collomb. Meanwhile, despite a moderate increase in arrivals, the one reception centre established in the suburbs north of Paris by Mayor Anne Hidalgo is not enough, and hundreds of young migrants and asylum seekers are living in the streets around Porte de la Chapelle in terribly precarious conditions. Eleonora Camilli reports.

Libya as an unlikely, dangerous ally; migrants sent back into a hell beyond the sea (as one recent report dubbed it). Italy’s bluff to close its ports to migrant boats and its “help them at home” policy. The fundamental rights jeopardized by immigrant detention and the misguided attempts to solve humanitarian crises with evictions. Ten essential reads on the price of borders and the failed policies of the EU and others on immigration and asylum.
