1. The EU-Turkey agreement explained

The 9 fundamental points of the UE-Turkey agreement in one of the best explanations that can be found on the web. The original text is accompanied by the parts that have been deleted or added during EU and Ankara negotiations. An analysis by Steve Peers from Essex University.

2. Risks at the expense of migrants

Just a few days before the UE-Turkey agreement on migrants, the implementation seems to be rather cumbersome. Greece chose the humanitarian and right alternative: there will not be forced mass evictions, but there will be checks for every asylum seeker.

4. Portugal, paradise for migrants

The problem of Portugal is the shortage of refugees arriving in the country. Prime Minister Antonio Costa unilaterally doubled the quota of refugees, decided in the “relocation’ agreement last September. Now, the problem is to encourage people to change destination, from Berlin to Lisbon. The story on Politico.eu.

5. A record number of deaths in Afghanistan, but the EU close its doors

According to a UN report, the civil war that tore Afghanistan apart caused 11,002 deaths only in 2015. It is a record that matches the increase of killed women (+37%) and children (+14%), compared to 2014. In the meantime, during the last quarter of 2015 and in 2016, with the agreement with Turkey, the EU decided to be stricter with regard to the recognition of the right to asylum for Afghans.

6. To be a Syrian in Calgary

The first Syrian refugee families that got a warm welcome in Canada, arrived to Calgary, the city of Olympic winters in 1988. They will start a new life here, 10,000 kilometres far from their native land. The story of Mohamed and Souad, two of the 26,000 Syrians arrived in Canada since November. On the UNHCR website.

8. Enough emergency, now we need integration

“Where is integration in the refugee crisis ? “ reflects Jenny Philimore on the blog of the London School of Economics. She also asks an important question: how to stop the urgency of the ongoing situation. According to Philimore, the three keywords in the way towards integration are “reception”, “a focus on a new social reality” and “social mobility”.

9. The other agreement

Barcelona, Lesvos and Lampedusa concluded a pact to provide assistance to refugees. In particular, Ada Colau – the Catalan mayor – assured that her city will provide technical, logistical, social and environmental support to the two islands, de facto capitals of refugee flows in these years. In addition, Barcelona will allocate 300,000 euros to support the NGOs which work on the islands. The press release from the City of Barcelona (in Italian).
