The odyssey of the 629 migrants on board the Aquarius has finally ended in Valencia, after nine nights out at sea following the Italian government’s decision to close the country’s ports. The decision was closely followed by the foreign press and even caused a minor diplomatic crisis with France, while all eyes were on the Aquarius. Meanwhile, as the standoff with the NGOs continues, units from the Italian Navy and Coast Guard are left in charge of search and rescue operations at sea.

At the exact same time as the judge of preliminary investigations of Catania, Nunzio Sarpietro, was confirming the sequestration of the search-and-rescue ship Open Arms, Frontex was relaunching fears of terrorist attacks while introducing its new programme to secure European borders, Themis, set to begin this month. New data from the International Organization for Migration say that, while there has been a drop in arrivals, there are now 75 per cent more deaths at sea.
