The decision was closely followed by the foreign press and even caused a minor diplomatic crisis with France, while all eyes were on the Aquarius. Meanwhile, as the standoff with the NGOs continues, units from the Italian Navy and Coast Guard are left in charge of search and rescue operations at sea.

The SOS Méditerranéee ship, also operated by Doctors Without Borders, is awaiting for new instructions off the coast of Sicily, amid concerns over the conditions of the 629 men, women and children on board.
