Dunkirk, Calais and Macron’s tough migration policy

March 29, 2018 - Emanuela Barbiroglio
Although the infamous Jungle was dismantled, migrants keep arriving. About one thousand people still live between Dunkirk and Calais, partly in emergency accommodations. Good news from Lampedusa: the island's hotspot has been shut following reports of the migrants' terrible living conditions. The foreign and Italian press have covered extensively the migrants' accounts and have urged to rethink the way we "welcome" refugees. A 22-year-old Eritrean has died of malnutrition on arrival in Pozzallo, while the ship that transported him, the ProActiva Open Arms, carrying over 200 rescued migrants, has been impounded on charges of abetting illegal immigration, after being blocked for over 24 hours off the Libyan coast. In Florence, we have met some members of the Senegalese community in the wake of Idy Diene's murder. Next, more on the collection of migrants' personal data. Last, the dialogue between France and Germany on the Dublin Regulation and the latest news from the UK and the US.

A few hours from the general election, anti-immigrant violence struck again in Italy; 54-year-old Idy Diene, from Senegal, was shot and killed in Florence. From Italy’s first black senator to the fears of the African community – who might face deportation – the foreign press has been covering Italy extensively in the wake of the election. We then look at Libya, where the agreement between Italy and local tribes are at risk, and Syria, with many refugees returning to the war-torn country. Next, the data on migrant women, who were the subject of a statement by UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi on March 8, and the prevalence of “boats and camps” in images of migrants and refugees. Last, deportees on a US flight to Somalia have denounced abuse at the hands of the ICE, and the massive exodus of Venezuelans to Colombia.

Italy has just wrapped up its general election and the results are clear: millions have voted for populist, anti-EU and anti-immigrant views. The election campaign was marked by strong anti-immigrant sentiments, culminating in episodes of violence, the latest being the attack on a human rights group in Macerata. We then take a look at the outer borders of Europe, where pushbacks and violations of human rights are still underway, and Libya, where the UNHCR is working to open new humanitarian corridors. Finally, some news from the USA, where the Supreme Court has made two contrasting decisions on immigrants, and post-Brexit UK.
