December 11, 2016 - Lorenzo Bagnoli
4,733. The death toll in the Mediterranean, ever since the UNHCR started counting in 2008, has never been so high. Several ships - belonging to NGOs or international missions - patrol the waters to save human lives. Analysing the difficulties in communication and the various political issues at stake, we have tried to understand why it is, however, that so many people are still dying on the central Mediterranean route, the one that leads to Italy.

A border within the city: a journey into the Milan hub /4

December 16, 2016 - Marina Petrillo
Since October 2013, an estimated 114,000 refugees have travelled through Milan. The city has welcomed them with the creation of a network of hundreds of beds, the efforts of many associations and continued donations by citizens. And at the heart of this all is the Milan hub, now in its fourth incarnation, widely regarded as a model in Europe, mitigating the suffering of tens of thousands while constantly facing a lack of national political response to the influx of refugees as well as the consequences of the closing of borders in the Balkans, Switzerland and France. We have been telling the story of this metaphorical internal border in an immersive report. This is the fourth and final part, where the protagonists look at their future.

What is going on in Como, the new Italian emergency zone

September 27, 2016 - Andrea Quadroni
The Como San Giovanni railway station is Italy’s new emergency zone. Through images and words, Andrea Quadroni and Emanuele Amighetti tell us about the last outpost before the Swiss border, with the opening of the new temporary immigrant reception centre and the evacuation of the makeshift camp, the unrelenting refoulement of immigrants according to the “Swiss method”, concerns over the treatment of unaccompanied minors and continuing calls for the opening of the borders.

A dangerous journey? On the limited effect of information campaigns to deter irregular migration

August 31, 2016 - Pierluigi Musarò
The campaign "Aware migrants" launched by the Italian government is only the last of a series of communication efforts from governments aimed at discouraging irregular migration. Whether the approach is harsh, like in the Australian case, or focuses more on preventing the loss of human lives (as the Italian government is doing), evidence points to limited effects and may ultimately result irrelevant. The in-depth analysis by Pierluigi Musarò.
