Where is my home? A journey through refugees housing occupations in Rome

December 13, 2017 - Eleonora Camilli
Selam Palace, Viale del Policlinico, and Via Collatina are places of historic housing occupations by refugees and asylum seekers in Rome, a European capital where immigrants are not the only ones affected by the housing crisis. In perpetual fear of eviction, these communities have a history and an identity, and are awaiting a better future. Eleonora Camilli and Federica Mameli were able to visit them and listen to the stories of their occupants.

The story of Lampedusa’s doctor, now available in English

November 20, 2017 - Emanuela Barbiroglio
Piero Bartolo, the extraordinary doctor who fought to give Lampedusa permanent air medical services, has personally treated thousands of migrants and continues to do so. He is often the last person to take care of the bodies of the drowned. His book, Lacrime di sale, has finally been published in English, and while the Mediterranean continues to mourn new victims, Emanuela Barbiroglio met him in London together with the co-author of the book, Lidia Tilotta.

Why Nigerians top the list of ethnicities most often deported from Italy, and how much it costs

November 3, 2017 - Lorenzo Bagnoli e Matteo Civillini
Thousands of Nigerians arrive in Italy through the Mediterranean, but they have always found it difficult to be granted asylum and are now increasingly often the target of expulsion orders. There is no home – tales from the refugees who used to live on Via Curtatone

September 21, 2017 - Eleonora Camilli
The evacuated building on Via Curtatone in Rome is now protected by a barbed wire fence. The homeless refugees are scattered throughout the city, having left behind many of their possessions. Eleonora Camilli has been with them since day one, through multiple evictions and sit-ins, and has gathered oral testimonies from Mediha, Aster, and Biniam.

Eight things we have learnt from the papers on the Iuventa

September 20, 2017 - Marina Petrillo
This summer the Mediterranean has been the scene of a rather brutal political game. The Italian government has worked to delegitimize NGOs operating in the area. They have been forced to back away from, sometimes even renounce, their role in rescuing migrants, thereby allowing the Libyan Coast Guard free rein to continue its refoulements. In this framework, the documents on the seizure of the German ship Iuventa provide a basis for better understanding what has happened at sea over the last few months.

Rome: the only European capital with no official plan for migrants

September 6, 2017 - Eleonora Camilli
Rome is still the only European capital without an official plan for migrants. From the open space where Baobab Experience acts as the reference point for the city’s operations room (while being periodically subject to evacuations), to the Intersos centre for unaccompanied minors; from the Red Cross centre whose lease from the City is up every six months, to the discovery that hundreds of people were left to fend for themselves on Via Vannina; from the false alarms to the actual figures regarding arrivals, to the failed attempts at establishing an official hub, to the answers from the National Railways and the silence from City Hall, Eleonora Camilli mapped out the situation in the capital.

The border crossing deaths at Brenner

August 16, 2017 - Andrea Quadroni & Michele Luppi
After our reports dedicated to Ventimiglia and Como, we close our trilogy on fatal incidents and pushbacks at those Italian locations where migrants cannot cross into other countries: France, Switzerland, and, in this case, Austria, where a general election is scheduled for October 15, the xenophobic far-right is on the rise, and the government is butting heads with Italy and using anti-immigration rhetoric during the campaign. Amid internal memos, shakedowns on trains, and steep mountain passes, Michele Luppi and Andrea Quadroni went to investigate the impact of this all on people’s lives.
