Tracking hate speech in Europe. A new study shows how tweets reflect public opinion on immigration

June 9, 2022 - Oiza Q. Obasuyi
Hate speech constitutes one of the most serious threats to coexistence in the European Union. Based on this premise, researchers from the University of Salamanca - Carlos Arcila-Calderòn, Patricia Sànchez-Holgado, Cristina Quintana-Moreno, Javier-J. Amores and David Blanco-Herrero - have shown that the presence of xenophobic messages on social media can be used to predict public opinion and citizen attitudes of social acceptance towards immigrants in Europe. We spoke about it with David Blanco-Herrero.

A tragedy within a tragedy: the racial discrimination suffered by non-Ukrainian refugees

March 1, 2022 - Oiza Q. Obasuyi
Since the breakout of war in Ukraine, more than 600,000 people have left the country, and many others are currently attempting to do so. Among these are people - mainly from Africa and South Asia - who are not Ukrainian but who live in Ukraine and who, just like the others, wanted to escape as quickly as possible. However, a growing number of pictures and videos show how unequal their treatment has been.

Good news from Lampedusa: the island's hotspot has been shut following reports of the migrants' terrible living conditions. The foreign and Italian press have covered extensively the migrants' accounts and have urged to rethink the way we "welcome" refugees. A 22-year-old Eritrean has died of malnutrition on arrival in Pozzallo, while the ship that transported him, the ProActiva Open Arms, carrying over 200 rescued migrants, has been impounded on charges of abetting illegal immigration, after being blocked for over 24 hours off the Libyan coast. In Florence, we have met some members of the Senegalese community in the wake of Idy Diene's murder. Next, more on the collection of migrants' personal data. Last, the dialogue between France and Germany on the Dublin Regulation and the latest news from the UK and the US.

March 13, 2018 - Open Migration
A few hours from the general election, anti-immigrant violence struck again in Italy; 54-year-old Idy Diene, from Senegal, was shot and killed in Florence. From Italy’s first black senator to the fears of the African community – who might face deportation – the foreign press has been covering Italy extensively in the wake of the election. We then look at Libya, where the agreement between Italy and local tribes are at risk, and Syria, with many refugees returning to the war-torn country. Next, the data on migrant women, who were the subject of a statement by UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi on March 8, and the prevalence of “boats and camps” in images of migrants and refugees. Last, deportees on a US flight to Somalia have denounced abuse at the hands of the ICE, and the massive exodus of Venezuelans to Colombia.

The foreign press has covered the march in Macerata, where thousands of people of people protested against racism and Luca Traini’s attack on migrants. In France, the National Court of Asylum has gone on strike to protest new government measures that would restrict access to asylum claim. Also: fresh violence against migrant centres in Italy, an investigation into the roots of intolerance, the voices of the victims in Macerata and much more.

While there is cause to celebrate the success of the Ero Straniero campaign (with its 85.000 signatures collected to change Italy’s migration policy), the general situation in the country is marked by daily instances of racist violence and abuse, amid the public’s indifference. Also: the hell of detention camps in Libya, the never-ending story of Calais, resignation syndrome in Sweden, refugees in limbo on Manus Island, the genocide of the Rohingya and the deaths of refugees as international crime. Last: an interactive map to learn about the arms trade in Europe and how it affects the “refugee crisis”.
