Situation on Greek Islands Showcases the EU’s Failure on Migration

September 24, 2019 - Marianna Karakoulaki
In August alone, 102 boats landed on the island of Lesbos and more than 2,800 people were assisted. Thousands more people were received in the Moria camp, already collapsing - it is hosting more than 10,000 people compared to the 3,000 places - which put the already critical conditions of migrants to the test even more severely. The health crisis, the new Greek plan for immigration and the harmful effects of the agreement between the EU and Turkey: Marianna Karakoulaki tells us about the situation on the island.

EU-Turkey deal: the burden on refugees in Greece

April 11, 2018 - Marianna Karakoulaki
The statistic success of the EU-Turkey deal in lowering the influx of migrants to Greece also has another face, a far-reaching “crisis of solidarity”: desperate conditions for people blocked in camps on the Egean islands; what has been described as “a mental health emergency”; and the opening or reopening of more dangerous routes. Marianna Karakoulaki, who knows the island camps well and has travelled the Balkan route, takes stock for us from Greece of two years of EU-Turkey deal.

April 11, 2018 - Open Migration
The Catania GIP has dropped the charge of criminal conspiracy against members of ProActiva Open Arms, but the NGO’s ship is still impounded and the case is still ongoing with new developments. Meanwhile, the International Criminal Court has obtained the report by UN Secretary Guterres, which focuses on the allegations of human rights violations against migrants in Libya. We then go to Niger, where the agreement with Italy is at risk, and Bardonecchia, following a police raid in a migrant centre that has ignited controversy over the last few days.

The 10 Best Articles on Refugees and Migration 9/2018

March 6, 2018 - Open Migration
Italy has just wrapped up its general election and the results are clear: millions have voted for populist, anti-EU and anti-immigrant views. The election campaign was marked by strong anti-immigrant sentiments, culminating in episodes of violence, the latest being the attack on a human rights group in Macerata. We then take a look at the outer borders of Europe, where pushbacks and violations of human rights are still underway, and Libya, where the UNHCR is working to open new humanitarian corridors. Finally, some news from the USA, where the Supreme Court has made two contrasting decisions on immigrants, and post-Brexit UK.

The 10 Best Articles on Refugees and Migration 42/2017

October 24, 2017 - Open Migration
We open this week with good news: the European Parliament backed a courageous proposal to reform the Dublin Regulation, which would mark a “Copernican revolution” in the common European asylum system. Refugees in limbo: from Sicily, where they are targeted by organised crime, to Calais, where the humanitarian emergency is still very much a live a year on from the “final evacuation”, to Serbia, where closed borders are leaving refugees exposed to violence and abuse at the hands of border officers. Finally, we talk about the tragedy of returns to Turkey and Syria, and we conclude with a reflection on how wrong it is to assume that all refugees just want to go home.
